Gary, Indiana
Gary is the largest city in Lake County. As of 2000, Gary had an estimated population of more than 102,000 residents. Gary was founded in 1906 by the US Steel Corporation as the location for its new plant. Gary was home to one of the first African American mayors. In the 1960’s Gary experienced a decline like much of the country. Two casinos were started in Gary in the 1990’s. Today, it still has a high crime rate and suffers from economic issues.
There are many things to do in Gary when you visit there. You can visit the Ingwald Moe House, the Wilbur Wynant House, the Marquette Park Pavilion, the Gary/Chanute Aquatorium, the old Gary Post Office, the Gary Memorial Auditorium and the Gary Mural Project. There is also the Gary Children’s museum, the West Side Theater, and the Morning Bishop Theater Playhouse. For more fun visit the Majestic Star Casino and Hotel and the Trump Casino.
